Ram Navami Special – Shri Raam Nam Mahima

Shri Raam Nam Mahima
The glory of the name of Shri Raam

श्री राम राम रामेति रमे रामे मनोरमे ।
सहस्रनाम तत्तुल्यं रामनाम वरानने ॥

Shri Rama Rama Rameti, Rame Rame Manorame;
Sahasrenama tattulyam, Rama Nama Varanane

Meaning:
By meditating on “Rama, Rama, Rama”, my Mind gets absorbed in the Divine Consciousness of Rama, which is Transcendental,
The Name of Rama is as Great as the Thousand Names of God (Vishnu Sahasranama-stotra, Uttara-khanda, Padma Purana 72.335).

Goddess Parvati asked Mahadev about the easiest way to recite the name of the Lord. Mahadev replied that even for the pundits, recitation of the name of Lord Ram is as good as reciting the whole Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra. So, what is so divine in the name “Rama” or “Raam” that merely repeating it time and time again can bring you closer to moksha?

The Meaning of Raam

The name Raam exists since the beginning of Hinduism. In Atharva Veda, the word Raam means “dark, dark-colored black” as in “a dark night”, a ratri. In other Vedic texts, the word Raam means “pleasing, delightful, charming, beautiful, lovely”. In a linguistic sense, the word means “stop, stand still, rest, rejoice, be pleased”. The seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu, dark-skinned Sri Raam has all of these qualities and many, many more.

The Historical Importance

The sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu was called Parashu-ram. The name Raam has its roots so deep that it is extremely difficult to find out the origin. However, the use of the name did not stop with the seventh avatar of our Lord. In fact, with the avatar of Lord Raam, the name became immortal, just like its owner.

Bhavya (grand) history of Bharat is filled with the devotees of Rama. Tulsidas’s Sagun Isth, Kabir’s Rama, Raam Jaap in Shri Guru Granth Sahib, or Gandhi’s “Hai Ram!” there is Raam Naam woven in every inch of the Bharatiya cultural fabric. Lord Rama was born in Ayodhya on the ninth day of the Chaitra mas (lunar month) to King Dashrath and Queen Kaushalya. This day is celebrated as Raam-Navami all over the world. He was given his name by Mahrishi Vashishtha. The Reign of Sri Raam as a king lasted for over thirty thousand years in the Vedic era. The era is called the “Raam Raj” or the “reign of King Raam”. The Raam Raj was a haven of peace and prosperity for the people. It is said that there were no crimes and no wars in the Raam raj. Just like his name, King Raam brought a period of rest and rejoice in our country.

Other Names of Lord Raam

Shri Raam is known by many names, including Ramachandra (beautiful as a moon), Raghava (Descendent of Raghu Kul or solar dynasty in Hinduism), Dasarathi (the son of Dashrath), Raam Lalla (infant Raam), Ramudu (Telugu), Ramar (Tamil), Phra Ram (Lao and Thai), Ramavijaya (Javanese), and many more. In Vishnu Sahasranama, Rama is the 394th name of Lord Vishnu but in the hearts of people like you and me, it is perhaps the only name, the name that can lead us to our destiny: moksha.

Ramayana was composed by the poet Valmiki around 300 BCE. It consists of nearly 24,000 shlokas (couplets) describing the events of Raam’s avatar from the birth to the initial years of Raam raj. The Ramayana describes how he married Sita and how he was sent to a forest (Vanvasa) for 14 years where he demolished the reign of Danava king Ravana.

Maryada Purushottam Shri Raam

Lord Rama is regarded as the ideal for every person alive. One should strive to achieve the ideals set by Shri Raam to achieve perfection. His idealism is known and followed by generations. It is still said, “Raghukul reet Sada Chali Aayi, Pran Jaye par Vachan na Jaye.” This means everybody in the Raghukul dynasty is true to his word even if he has to lose his life to fulfill his promise. That is the magic of Maryada Purshottam Shri Ram (The man who is supreme in honor, Shri Rama).

This article is not enough to describe the phenomenon that is “Raam”. He was not just a son, not just a husband, not just a brother, not even just a king. He was and is the epitome of honor, truth, patience, and spiritualism for every Hindu alive. So, the Ram-Navami pray with all your heart to Sri Raam for world peace. Jai Shri Ram!
